Licenses

When purchasing a theme from the Start Bootstrap Shop, there are a few different license types to choose from. Here’s a simple breakdown of what you can and can’t do with the license you purchase.

Standard License Extended License
Number of end products 1 1
Commercial or personal projects
Projects for paying clients
Use in an end product that users can access for free
Use in an end product that users must pay to access
Use in an end product that is redistributed
Use in an “on demand” product or service
(ex. “site builder” or “create your own” apps and sites)

Standard License

In short, if your are creating a single end product (like a website or web application) that end users can access for free, and the end product’s source files are not being redistributed in any way, the Standard License is sufficient. The full terms of the Standard License are as follows:

  1. The Standard License grants the purchaser a non-exclusive, non-transferrable, and ongoing right to make use of the Theme.
  2. You are licensed to use the Theme to create a single End Product for personal use, or for a client.
  3. The End Product is a customized implementation of the Theme requiring the application of skill and effort
  4. The End Product you create may be accessed by multiple End Users, and the End Users must be able at access the End Product for free.
  5. With the Standard License, you can:
    1. Use the Theme to create one single End Product for personal use or for a client. You can transfer the single End Product to your client for any fee. This license is then transferred to your client.
  6. With the Standard License, you cannot:
    1. Create multiple End Products using the Theme.
    2. Create an End Product where End Users must pay in order to access.
    3. Redistribute the Theme “as is” by itself or as part of a bundle of products.
    4. Redistribute the modified End Product.
    5. Redistribute the Theme “as is”, or the modified End Product, as part of an “on demand” product or service (like a “site generator” or “create your own” website application).
  7. Any components included with the Theme which includes, but is not limited to: graphics, images, code, or any other content, retains its original license. The author of the Theme will document any and all licensed components included with the Theme. You are responsible for adhering to the original license of any additional licensed components included with the Theme.
  8. The author of the Theme retains ownership of the Theme, but grants you the license on these terms. This license is between the author of the Theme and you, the purchaser. Blackrock Digital LLC (the Start Bootstrap Shop) is not a party to this license or the one granting you the license.

Extended License

In short, if your are creating a single end product (like a website or web application) that end users must pay to access, then the Extended License is required. With the Extended License, you can also redistribute the modified End Product as part of an application, but you cannot redistribute the Theme “as is” as a stock asset on its own or as part of a bundle of products.

If you need more capabilities than what are offered with the Extended License, you can contact us for more information about obtaining and OEM License.

The full terms of the Extended License are as follows:

  1. The Extended License grants the purchaser a non-exclusive, non-transferrable, and ongoing right to make use of the Theme.
  2. You are licensed to use the Theme to create a single End Product for personal use, or for a client.
  3. The End Product is a customized implementation of the Theme requiring the application of skill and effort
  4. The End Product you create may be accessed by multiple End Users, either for free or for a fee.
  5. With the Extended License, you can:
    1. Use the Theme to create one single End Product for personal use or for a client. You can transfer the single End Product to your client for any fee. This license is then transferred to your client.
    2. Create an End Product where End Users must pay in order to access.
    3. Redistribute the modified End Product.
  6. With the Extended License, you cannot:
    1. Create multiple End Products using the Theme.
    2. Redistribute the Theme “as is” by itself or as part of a bundle of products.

OEM License

An OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) License is available for purchase by request. OEM Licensing would be required in special cases like multiple redistribution channels of an end product, two or more versions of an end product, or relicensing of the customized original product. An OEM License is non-exclusive, worldwide, transferrable, irrevocable, and perpetual. For more information regarding OEM Licensing, please contact us at [email protected]

Helpful Examples

For freelancers or agencies creating a website for a single client

If you are a freelancer or agency creating one website for a single client, and the website you’re creating can be accessed by the end user (in this case, visitors to your client’s website) free of charge, then the Standard License is all you need.

If users have to pay to access certain features or areas of the website, like a SaaS application, then an Extended License is needed.

Note: an typical e-commerce website requires users to pay for products on the website, but not to use the website – in this case a Standard License is enough.

For companies creating a website for their own business

If you represent a company, and are building a website for the busienss, you must choose the appropriate license. If the website you are building is informational, like a landing page or marketing website, where users can access the website for free, then the Single License is all you need.

If your company is creating a website that requires users to pay to access certain areas of the website, then you must purchase an Extended License.

For creating multiple end products using the same theme

If you are creating more than one end product, but want to use the same theme, then you will need to buy multiple licenses of the same theme – Standard Licenses if the end product is accessed for free, Extended Licenses if the end product requires paid access.

Multi channel redistribution, and advanced development

If you are looking to redistribute your end product through multiple channels, or require advanced terms that surpass the capabilities of the Extended License, then an Enterprise License is necessary.
